The Grog's Gamut blog, running the gamut of emotions from A to B, achieved some prominence during the 2010 Federal election as an anonymous blog. Not long after the election The Australian published the identity of the blogger as Greg Jericho, a Canberra public servant. It caused much blogosphere controversy and media comment at the time with the motivations of The Australian and its journalist questioned.
It was only during a Twitter exchange last week that I became aware that Greg Jericho had a background in Cairns. Greg lived at Redlynch for 11 years (1995-2006). His earlier Cairns years as a Casino dealer were not all happy and he has previously blogged a revealing portrait of the emotions of dealing to gambling addicts at Reef Casino, described as "the most depressing time of my life": Don't bet on the joys of the pokies.
After a break following his exposure Jericho still blogs at Grog's Gamut and also appears in other forums including ABC's The Drum. He has also just published a book The Rise of the Fifth Estate: social media and blogging in Australian politics, which is now on my must read list.
The most high profile identity 'outings' of anonymous bloggers in recent years have been in the UK. Dr Brooke Magnanti, research scientist, writer and former sex worker, revealed herself as the author of Belle de Jour: Diary of a London Call girl, after being tipped off she may be about to be exposed by a tabloid. Last week the News Ltd journalist who exposed the award winning Nightjack blog of a police detective was arrested on suspicion of computer hacking.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, The latest post by Greg Jericho at The Drum is highly recommended: No avoiding the new tax reality. An excellent, informative post with much information that I will return to on some favourite themes ........
Disclaimer: neither Loose Change or Kitchenslut are anonymous blogs.
